What is the secret behind FMAV’s success throughout the years? Our people! They make us who we are today and who we will be in the future.  As Canada’s largest independently owned audiovisual company, FMAV has more than 250 staff across seven offices from coast to coast, and it’s our people who make us a different kind of Audiovisual Company.

Because our people make the difference, we thought we’d tell you more about them, and how they’ve helped us become a favorite in the events industry, in an Employee Spotlight series.

In this series, you’ll get a glimpse at one featured employee each month. We will talk about what makes them tick, why they come to work each day and what they look forward to doing in their free time?

This month we talked to Chris Baker about his role here at FMAV, his passion for the events industry and his secret talents.

Here’s what he had to say:

What is your current role and how long have you been working at FMAV?

I am the Assistant General Manager of the FMAV Edmonton office. I started with FMAV in August of 2017.  I have previously worked in the events industry and on a few occasions collaborated with FMAV on various projects.  Being exposed to the organization, I knew it was a company I wanted to work for.

Tell us about your start at FMAV?

I was excited by the opportunity to get back into the events industry, and work with an exciting and growing company! Born and raised in Edmonton, the FMAV team in Edmonton was very welcoming and motivates me on a daily basis.

What made you want to get into the field?

I was asked to take care of lighting on my first event back when I was 13 or 14 years old.  From that point on I was hooked.  I loved the creativity and the uniqueness that special events and production offers it was one of the only industries where every single day was truly different and offered all sorts of interesting opportunities and challenges for me. I enjoy attending festivals and being part of the Edmonton community as both an attendee and as an AV Partner. My passion and exposure to the region’s festivals allow me to work closely with clients to bring them ideas and inspiration.

I was then, and still am, extremely passionate about the lighting side of the business. I see every event as a blank canvas and enjoy working with clients on the use of lighting and other production elements to paint a picture of the attendee experience.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I enjoy the fact that every day is a new day, and brings something different. My days can vary from management meetings, meetings with clients, and designing shows. Occasionally you can find me setting, operating and striking shows if the team needs a hand. I am a people person so I truly enjoy the collaboration and teamwork within this role. I am also the president of the ILEA Edmonton chapter and enjoy it because it provides me an opportunity to connect with and give back to the community that we work with every day.

Tell us something about your personal life. What do you like to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies?

I’ve been married to my wife for 5 years and we have a 9-year-old dog that we love taking to the river valley. My wife and I love to travel and always try to have a vacation booked so we have something to look forward to. I enjoy attending and participating in the many festivals and events that Edmonton has to offer, my favourite being the Taste Of Edmonton, because I love food and Edmonton!
