How to keep your social walls spam free… And what to do if you’ve been targeted

It’s no secret that live social media walls (also known as Twitter Walls) are incredible audience engagers; They help start the conversation and keep it going and they offer an open way to connect and share.  Many event and meeting planners have adopted social walls with great success but as they rise in popularity, so do the resources and the risks and that openness can leave your event vulnerable to inappropriate ‘digital gate crashers’.  I caught up with Joel Reodica, FMAV Solutions Specialist, to go over the good, the bad and what to do if your event falls victim to social media spammers.[vc_empty_space height=”100px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]

The Good: The benefits of using paid tools

The investment is small and totally worth it! The Bad: The Challenges Of Using Free Tools (Nothing’s REALLY Free)

I heard this phrase once before and thought it was brilliant: “Remember, if it’s “free” then it means YOU are the product.” When you try to get away with doing a social media wall ‘on the cheap’ you run the risk of being spammed. Quite often when you use free tools you don’t have that ever-precious moderator feature to keep the nudies from ruining your event. On top of that, customization is limited and when using a free or trial version of the app there will be watermark on the page saying so. Yes, there are sometimes tricks around this but when developers work hard on bringing us these cool engaging products it’s kind of a slap in the face to use their trial versions at your event.[/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”64px” image_repeat=”no-repeat”][vc_column_text]

The Nudies: What to do about spam

“Report. Report. Report. ,” Says Joel. “Reporting spammers’ tweets or inappropriate accounts will eliminate rogue bots and their posts and result in more accurate and valuable social media engagement.” Joel’s number one advice is to always use a trusted social wall app with robust moderator and security features. It’s best to be proactive rather than reactive and ban any known spam users or bots and filter out problematic phrases and keywords.  This will prevent any offensive or inappropriate posts and keep the engagement focused on your event.
