Annually, on March 8th, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate women’s achievements. Observed since in the early 1900s, the purpose of this day, International Women’s Day, is to ensure bright, equal, safe and rewarding futures for girls.
On Thursday, March 8, 2012, over 300 women, who suffer with labels, such as homelessness, substance-addiction and mental-health challenges, gathered at the John Innes Community Centre to enjoy an afternoon of food, entertainment, art activities, dancing, draw prizes and a gift bag for everyone.
Heidi Welker, VP Marketing, volunteered with fellow PCMA (Professional Convention Management Association) Canada East Community Service Committee members and CAMH (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) to set up the event, mingle with the ladies, and make sure the event ran smoothly. “Volunteering at this event was one of the most enriching experiences of my life,” shared Welker.
Sponsors for this event included the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Centre Stage, Voice Logic, Freeman and AVW-TELAV.
