Because our people make the difference, we thought we’d tell you more about them, and how they’ve helped us become a favorite in the events industry, in an Employee Spotlight series.
In this series, you’ll get a glimpse at one featured employee each month. We will talk about what makes them tick, why they come to work each day and what they look forward to doing in their free time?
This month, we talked to Dominic Laplante about his role here at FMAV, his passion for the events industry and his secret talents. Here’s what he had to say:
What is your current role and how long have you been working at FMAV?
I have officially been part of FMAV since 2011. I am a lighting designer and technical director at the Montreal branch. My role is to be the contact person for the technicians at events. I’m also the key contact between the client, technicians and the event venue staff. On-site, I play the role of construction foreman: I assess the environment, guide the technicians, and when necessary, find effective solutions to accommodate requests.
Tell us about your start and growth at FMAV?
FMAV has great values as a company and cares for its employees. After many years as a lighting designer at FMAV, I am now officially the Technical Director of the Montreal branch. I am very happy!
What made you want to get into the field?
At school, I studied film and theatre. These areas have always interested me. In time, I enrolled in a technical production program and discovered sound, lighting and pyrotechnics where I discovered my passion for pyrotechnics. I did more than 250 outdoor pyrotechnic shows over the past five years. At a certain point, I made the choice to pursue my lighting career, to develop my talent in this area and become a lighting designer. Ever since, I have had the pleasure of using my imagination to create concepts that appeal to clients and the guests alike.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
What I like most about my work is the ability to create a distinctive look! I also like starting with an empty box and adding creative elements to create something spectacular. The decor is the first impression guests have of an event, which often comes from the lighting. I’m proud to participate in the artistic creation of any event. It’s a wonderful feeling to look at the final project and say, “Wow, we did that!”
Tell us something about your personal life. What do you like to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies?
I have a wife and two daughters. When I am home, I take the opportunity to have a good time with my family. In the summer months, I like to go off-road cycling and, in winter, I go downhill skiing. I try to spend as much time as possible with long-time friends.
