What is the secret behind FMAV’s success throughout the years? Our people! They make us who we are today and who we will be in the future.  As Canada’s largest independently owned audiovisual company, FMAV has more than 250 staff across seven offices from coast to coast, and it’s our people who make us a different kind of Audiovisual Company.

Because our people make the difference, we thought we’d tell you more about them, and how they’ve helped us become a favorite in the events industry, in an Employee Spotlight series.

In this series, you’ll get a glimpse at one featured employee each month. We will talk about what makes them tick, why they come to work each day and what they look forward to doing in their free time?

This month we talked to Andrew Sykes, our youngest General Manager who recently got inducted in PCMA’s 20 in their 20s class of 2017, about his role at FMAV, his passion for the events industry and his secret talents. Here’s what he had to say:

What is your current role and how long have you been working at FMAV?

I’m the General Manager of the Atlantic region for FMAV. In my 10 years in the industry, I’ve worked as a technician and solutions specialist, learning the technical and event expertise to best serve our event planner friends. I joined FMAV two years ago and work closely with our Account Managers and overlook all departments in ensuring all pieces are aligned to deliver on exceptional experience for our clients.

Tell us about your start and growth at FMAV?

I started my career as an entrepreneur owning my own audio-visual company and went on to become the Head of Operations at Sound Systems Plus. When the company merged into FMAV, I settled into my new role as a Solutions Specialist. With the rapid growth of the company, I was given the reigns of the Atlantic region of our local, established business and grew into the role of Assistant General Manager and now the General Manager of the region.

What made you want to get into the field?

I grew up in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, as a computer guy who spent his spare time DJ’ing high school dances. I was actively involved in setting up and managing audio visual at the school and university level and had a passion for technology and the challenging world of events. I believe it was a natural next step for me.

What do you enjoy most about your role?

I like learning something new every day and being challenged. I also enjoy staying on the pulse of technological development. In our continuously evolving industry, you need to be on top of the recent trends. From technology to leadership, there is always more to discover. And the rapid growth and balancing various responsibilities and objectives keeps me on my toes. The potential for development is huge and I get to work with a team of great people. With FMAV, I know I can always look forward to enhanced success and satisfaction.

Tell us something about your personal life. What do you like to do in your spare time? What are your hobbies?

On my days off, I enjoy going out with friends, spending time with my family dog Sarge and working on special audio-visual projects.

I enjoy shopping and am always equipped with the latest Apple products. I also have a deep love for books. I’m currently reading Originals by Adam Grant and have already decided on a name for my biography – How to Rule the World before 30.

My mantra is ‘life is short, make the most of it’. That’s what I do, at and outside work.

Andrew is one of over 250 valued employees at FMAV. You can learn more about the FMAV culture on our website, or visit the FMAV Careers page to hear more from our people.
